Let’s talk about FOMO. Yes, the Fear of Missing Out. Most of my friends know I struggle often with of FOMO. If there is a party, an event, or even a work day, I want to be there. I want to be a part of all the things because I hate missing out on any opportunity – especially those that bring together great people and have a chance for a little fun.
FOMO can strike professionally as well. When someone else gets a promotion, moves to a new job, or receives an award, it can be easy to think, “I wish that was me.” It doesn’t matter if the promotion or recognition was well deserved, we can still think we’re missing out on something. We may not have even wanted that promotion, new job, travel benefit, move, or whatever it might be. The fear that we are somehow missing out on something can lead us to feeling less than or that we are not enough. Worse than that, it can cause us to become competitive and look down on others who have been given the opportuity. Next time FOMO hits, I want you to remember a couple of things.
The grass isn’t always greener; sometimes it’s just more grass. A promotion or new position doesn’t always mean the change is for the better and moving on is not necessarily moving up. A position or title does not equal a person’s value as an individual. Doing your own job well is valuable to your organization and that value is as important as any other. Valuing yourself for who you are as an individual creates self worth that goes with you to any job at any level.
By focusing on another person’s position or skills, you devalue your own position and skills. The comparison trap can be harsh and often unrealistic. Rather, than compare yourself to others, take inventory of your own strengths and accomplishments. A good look at your own impact often reveals that your influence is greater than you realized. Lean into that impact and let it guide you.
Next time you get a case of FOMO, celebrate with your colleague and realize you’re not missing out, you’re leaning in.
